This Section of the Path: Nature and Beaches Galore Experience a scenic ride along Sweden’s longest sandy beach and through verdant nature reserves on this part of the path.
Starting from Båstad harbour, the route hugs the coastline up to the Hemmeslöv pine forest, marking the border between Halland and Skåne. A leisurely stretch awaits along Laholmsbukten’s expansive sandy beach. Skummeslövsstrand, a family-friendly area, features restaurants and cafes, with shallow waters and open landscapes.
Inland, you’ll find the stunning Skottorp Palace and the quaint town of Laholm, Halland’s oldest town, approximately 20 minutes from the path.
North of Skummeslövsstrand lies Mellbystrand, a nostalgic seaside resort with towering dunes and a wilder sea. This area is dotted with ice cream shops, mini-golf courses, and outdoor dining establishments.
North of Mellbystrand, the path meanders through sand dunes and beach forests, past Laxvik, and into open country south of Halmstad. Before leaving the sea, visit Påarp’s burial ground, home to 220 Iron Age graves.
The path then takes you to Östra Stranden and eventually to Halmstad Castle.
Båstad – A Year-Round Active Lifestyle
Båstad, known for its beauty and array of activities, was developed into an international tourism destination in the early 1900s by Ludvig Nobel. With a focus on golf and tennis, the area now boasts 41 tennis courts and 126 golf holes, set amidst attractive natural surroundings.
Enjoy over 150 kilometers of hiking trails in Bjärehalvön, with salty sea air, vast views, enchanting beech forests, and the shimmering sea.
Don’t miss the local farm shops for regional produce. Båstad and Bjärehalvön offer excellent holiday accommodations, warm baths, and spa facilities, ensuring relaxation and rejuvenation year-round.
Detour to Laholm – The Little Town with Big Art
Laholm, Halland’s oldest town, boasts medieval charm in Gamleby and a beautiful 1700s town hall in Stortorget square.
Known as “the little town with the big works of art,” Laholm is adorned with sculptures at nearly every corner and is home to the Teckningsmuseet, dedicated to drawing.
Laholm’s award-winning town park, designed under the „wild is beautiful‟ theme, includes diverse landscapes. The River Lagan flows by the town center, perfect for enjoying smoked treats or a historical steamboat ride. Laholm offers accommodations, shops, cafes, and restaurants, easily reachable from Kattegattleden.
Halmstad – The Summer City
Halmstad, Halland’s largest city, chartered in 1307, is known as a prime summer destination, offering events and lively streets. Kattegattleden runs through central Halmstad, crossing the River Nissan near the 1600s Halmstad Castle. While the castle isn’t open to the public, its courtyard is worth exploring. Across the street is Stora Torg, ideal for shopping and dining. Halmstad is bike-friendly, with free public bike pumps available throughout the municipality.
