The Klarälvsbanan is a 90-kilometer paved, car-free cycling path following an old railway line, extending from Karlstad to Uddeholm. This route takes you from the expansive agricultural landscapes in the south to the deep, welcoming forests in the north. At the northern and southern ends of the Klarälvsbanan, the trail connects with the Klarälvsleden, offering additional adventures through breathtaking natural surroundings.
The Klarälvsbanan was originally a railway line built in the late 19th century. Spanning 180 kilometers, this narrow-gauge railway line ran from Skoghall in the south through Karlstad, Munkfors, Hagfors, and to Filipstad. Owned primarily by the then Uddeholmsbolaget, the railway was named NKlJ-banan, short for Nordmark – Klarälvens Järnvägar.
Combined with the Klarälvsleden, the Klarälvsbanan forms a 220-kilometer-long route. It’s a cycling trail that weaves through the stunning landscapes of Värmland, stretching from Hammarö in the south to Sysslebäck in the north.
The Klarälvsbanan itself is a 90-kilometer long, car-free path for cycling and walking. The repurposed railway line, now paved, provides a sensory-rich experience, encompassing nature, culture, cuisine, adventure, and fresh air. From Karlstad in the south to Uddeholm in the north, the trail offers a variety of exciting sites and stories to explore and enjoy.
The asphalt path of the Klarälvsbanan ends in the deep forests around Uddeholm, where the Klarälvsleden begins.
