The Kattegattleden route from Kungsbacka to Gothenburg offers a mesmerizing natural experience. Before reaching the lively urban atmosphere of Gothenburg, the path meanders along the coast, with rocky landscapes and marinas enhancing the journey.
The route runs along Kungsbackafjorden. At the maritime museum below Onsala church, discover the story of “Lasse i Gatan,” the king’s privateer Lars Gathenhielm, born here in 1689.
Särö, once the playground of royalty and Gothenburg’s elite in the early twentieth century, is worth a detour. Walk along Särö Västerskog beside the sea. Past this seaside resort, the trail follows the old Säröbanan railway line, offering views of cliffs, lush forests, bays, and marinas, with plenty of swimming spots.
Approaching Gothenburg, the trail passes through Nya Varvet docklands, Klippans kulturreservat, and Röda Stens Konsthall. Nearing Järntorget square, the path leads to Gothenburg’s center, skirting picnic-friendly Kungsparken and Stora Teatern.
The final leg of the journey runs by Trädgårdsföreningen, a well-preserved 19th-century park, concluding at Drottningtorget near the Central Station.
Kungsbacka, a town established in the 1500s and Danish until 1645, charms with its old wooden houses. The Röda Stugan, the town’s oldest building, and Tölöberg, the oldest water tower, provide historical insights. Across Kungsbackafjorden lies Tjolöholm Castle, Sweden’s only Tudor castle. Kungsbacka blends traditional charm with modern shopping centers.
Gothenburg, established in 1621, is Sweden’s second-largest city. Its compact center is bisected by a zig-zag-shaped moat. Renowned for fish and seafood, Gothenburg’s culinary scene includes Saluhallen and Feskekörka. The city’s seaside location facilitates excursions to the archipelago, offering swimming, walks, and crab fishing. Gothenburg’s vibrant culture spans shopping, museums, opera, theater, and music.
