Map
Location
Säffle
Description

Leaving Säffle, the route progresses through Värmlandsbro and Liljedal towards Borgvik, renowned as one of Värmland’s most well-preserved historical industrial areas.

For stocking up on supplies, Säffle’s town center is ideal. Additionally, the harbor area offers a chance to enjoy a meal at the Stenmagasinet restaurant or to engage in some of Sweden’s finest zander fishing right in the town’s heart.

Don’t overlook the old water tower, Vattentornet, which hosts thought-provoking art exhibitions during the summer. Keep an eye out for various public artworks around the town center; some are prominently displayed, while others are more hidden.

The journey from Säffle to Värmlandsbro includes cycling on mixed traffic routes, compacted gravel tracks, and asphalt roads. It winds through lush farmlands, showcasing an abundance of locally grown produce. Pause at Huggenäs Kapell, notable for its distinctive bell tower and historic gravestones. In Värmlandsbro, a stop at Grön Ko café and market hall, located in a converted railway station, is recommended for its local fare. (Note: crossing road 45 is required here.)

The segment from Värmlandsbro to Liljedal, about 12 km, is notably hilly, so ensure your bike is well-maintained.

In Liljedal, a charming archipelago community with a glassworks museum, head down towards the harbor to find information about the area and access facilities like toilets and a shower. Here, hike the certified Kycklingleden trail or plan a visit to Liljedals Glasbruksmuseum, where you’ll find fascinating history dating from 1780 to 1917, including the model for the famous Absolut vodka bottle. The area also honors the Swedish musician Sven-Erik Magnusson with a special artwork. An unstaffed grocery store, 24Food, is available here.

Continuing towards Grums on Nya Vägen Road, cross a bridge over Ransundet, a part of Lake Vänern. After the bridge, follow the narrow gravel track along the water to reach a small marina leading to the community of Segmon.

Fancy a coffee break? In Segmon, Ankans Café och Bistro and the interior design shop Rost och Rustik await. Alternatively, head to Billeruds Golfklubb and the Sjöskafferiet restaurant. Besides dining and coffee, the golf club offers accommodation in newly renovated rooms or a cabin. Approximately 2.5 km after turning towards Borgvik, you’ll arrive at Grums Fish ’n’ Camp, where you can swim, enjoy ice cream, and stay overnight in a cabin or houseboat. The Sävsjöleden walking trail is adjacent.

About 6 km past the campsite, Lake Vänern reappears near an area known as Borgviksjön. At a T-junction, turn right towards Borgvik.

Borgvik stands out as one of Värmland’s most preserved historical industrial sites, bustling with summer activities. Cycling here immerses you in a culturally and industrially rich environment. The foundry ruins offer a glimpse into the area’s ironworking past, with picnic spots available. Dine or grab coffee at Sliperiet, Hamncaféet, or Kungskvarnen. To delve deeper into Borgvik’s history, visit the Borgviks Museum, open in summer with public facilities.

While in Borgvik, explore Oscar Magnusson’s Sliperiet art gallery, showcasing exhibits in a former industrial setting, or enjoy fine dining at Sliperiet Gastronomi. Other options include visiting graffiti artist Hampus Karlsson, grabbing an ice cream at Borgviks Hamncafé, or dining at the renowned Kungskvarnen hotel and restaurant. For antique and retro enthusiasts, Borgviks Antik och Kuriosa is a must-visit. Stay at Klaraborg, Kungskvarnen, or the harbor campsite.

Discover Lake Vänern by renting a kayak, canoe, or SUP from Vänerkajak, or embark on hiking trails like Lövåsslingan or Bokskogsslingan.
